i absolutely love aus don’t you? i especially love those little snippets where you see a glimpse and nothing more and it makes you yearn for more but there’s nothing and life is cruel isn’t it?
Breathing with a cracked rib(s) is difficult, breathing heavily with a cracked rib(s) is fucking death. Louis knows this fact, Louis is very well acquainted with this fact, hell, Louis has shared embarrassing stories about John over cookies and wine with this fact. His back hurts like a cunt and he doesn’t want to imagine the big red stain spreading across his pristine white jacket (John often tells him to either start wearing less fancy clothes or stop yapping about them, Louis graciously does neither). The worst of the hits on his face is the cut just a few centimeters from his left eye (it’s really not, but it’s sure as fuck feels like it). His knuckles are smeared with the mixture of his own blood and Vincent’s.
Over all, he looks like shit, and Vincent would have pointed that out to him, sneering how he couldn’t even hide his pretty little face behind John, but this would only have mattered a long time ago, back when he still didn’t know about Vincent’s gang, back when they only started getting familiar with the other (nothing quite says sweet, sweet adrenaline rush like punching the fuck out of Vincent). It wouldn’t have mattered anyway because Vincent hardly looked any better.
It’s only the two of them, the two leaders mano-a-mano. They’re in a parking lot, a new location for a not-so new activity. The others are surrounding them like a chalk-made circle, already having had the chance to prove themselves to everyone before it came down to the final round. It looks like a vague replica of a fight club, except not as fancy nor as camaraderie-feeling.
Louis smirks widely at Vincent, and the sound of a lip opening doesn’t even register in his mind. Vincent glowers back. Before either of them are aware of it, Louis is already punching Vincent in the gut. Vincent retaliates by kicking his thigh in his crouched position and Louis hits the ground with the side of his face that has the cut. Red smudges on the ground when Louis yanks Vincent down and nothing sounds like sweet victory like the resounding bang of Vincent’s head on the concrete.
It never matters who wins, no one ever keeps a tally of the number of times either of them has fainted or been dragged away or ‘lost’. It’s a push versus a shove and the number of times someone falls doesn’t count as much as who will stop getting up.
Neither will stop until someone’s down for the count.
(Perhaps permanently.)
(And Louis already knows his next move. It doesn’t matter if Vincent’s best friend is aware of Vincent’s other life, because either way, he will be dragged into it.)

I’m trying to keep myself from cleaning up my art too much, so this is a little messier than usual. I’m really stuck on this knights thing? I keep drawing it!
(This obviously isn’t any specific/coherent era or region, I was just having fun with the designs.)

Vincent tensed for barely a second before he was able to identify whose steps his ears picked up (caught between swift and languid, sure but not strong) and loosened his hold on the hilt of his sword slightly. There were other footsteps that accompanied the prince’s of course, but Vincent was able to put a name to the other three right after and the only person Vincent could think to worry of was His Royal Highness.
He did not bother to glimpse at the group that was nearing the gate he was stationed at. The king was talking clipped to the adviser who was informing—or reminding, and that would have explained the king’s responses, the king would have normally talked more, discussed everything in great detail because he accepted nothing less than complete understanding and discerning—the royal kin of what was expected and what was not of this meeting, of who exactly the Bell family was and what the young Penelope of the North was like, and the schedule of the entirety of the meeting. The man in waiting, Arden who was either young or old, depending on how one looked, was perceivably quiet by the prince’s side.
The prince was silent himself, unobtrusive and unwilling to draw attention to himself. Never invisible though, never anything less than a striking presence.
Vincent could not think of His Royal Highness as anything less.
He wondered if Prince Theodore’s—Teddy, he once murmured, his breath ghosting over Vincent’s lips and the same cheeks he grazed his fingers against, and all of Teddy’s touches were like imprints on the knight’s skin and Vincent wanted, right now, never then, to scrub away the burn bitterly—silence was because he wanted none of this as well, if he was quiet because the only thing that could have left his mouth was disdain over this whole thing and a prince was better than that. Nothing could have quite caused his heart to squeeze as much.
He finally turned an eye to them, His Majesty’s and His Royal Highness’ crowns shining against the light like beacons. It might have been because the prince’s own was pristine silver, but Vincent thought that his was far brighter and more welcoming than that of his father’s. Prince Theodore—not Teddy, not Teddy—looked firm and sure against the image of his father, powerful but gentle, a worthy king.
He did not look the littlest bit like how Vincent felt, deep inside, hidden underneath muscle and bone and blood and heart, underneath the whispers that hiss your duty your responsibility he is of royal blood your prince your king-to-be yourmasternotyourlover. But a prince needed to learn to put his kingdom before himself, to learn how to wear a mask if he needed to, much like how a knight needed to put the royal house before himself. Vincent unknowingly clung to the knowledge, because there was little more for him to believe in, little more to keep him on the ground.
This was the first proposal to Prince Theodore’s hand in marriage and that fact alone took away some of his sanity.

Vincent’s music can lull everything in Teddy’s mind. It eases into Teddy and everything else dims to a dark, dreary gray.
As Vincent moves his fingers across the neck of his guitar, a small, guiltless smile that he has learned to associate with Teddy and happiness and peace, Teddy feels warmth spread across his cheeks. It is beautiful, if only because it is Vincent. (Teddy feels so much for Vincent, pride, awe, joy, gratitude, so so much.)
He doesn’t register the cold sipping through the cracks anymore, because all he feels is the flame licking at his heart for the beautiful, beautiful boy in front of him, this boy who he watched grow and who is still growing into the spaces in his skin, this boy who still has not found his place but who Teddy will not leave.
Vincent watches his hands glide across his guitar contently. Because he is that. Content and peaceful. He looks up and he finds the sheet Teddy used to cover himself has slid off until only half of Teddy’s torso is covered. Teddy is quiet and still and Vincent wants to capture Teddy like this, the candles’ lights flickering across his face, his hair uncombed and perfectly unkempt, his eyes half-glazed and intent at the same time. Like this where Teddy is bare and gorgeous and his alone. The smile on his own face is only a small quirk of the lips but it holds every joy Vincent feels in this moment. The tunes his hands make are thoughtless and inspired by his every emotion for Teddy.
The world is quiet around them, still and perfect, and Vincent doesn’t want to get away from this, doesn’t want to wake up to the grueling reality of this hushed and bright nonreality. So he continues to play his guitar and watch the perfect, wonderful, precious thing he wants to call his own.

Alright, there was actually a MUCH BIGGER IDEA behind this fic (and who knows, maybe I’ll still finish it!)
